Orientation Workshop Summary

Orientation Workshops are conducted in English and are open to all spoken language court interpreters. This is a highly focused program where you will spend two days immersed in a basic orientation to courts and the justice environment. This includes: an overview of the profession, discussion and role play concerning the Code of Professional Conduct, and practice exercises in the three modes of interpreting used in court―simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, and sight translation. Emphasis is also given to educating interpreters about how to improve one’s language proficiency, what techniques you can use to develop specific skills required for interpreting, and where you can go to receive professional skills training, among others. We have packed this workshop with information and tools you will apply for years to come. The format is highly interactive, which means you will use your newfound skills, discuss shared challenges with your peers, and take part in insightful exercises designed to help build your interpreting skills. This workshop is a prerequisite to taking the Written Examination and Oral Performance Examination, as well as any CICRP-sponsored skill building workshops.

Prerequisite:  The orientation workshop is a prerequisite to taking the written examination and oral qualifications examination. Candidates must attend the full two-day session in order to fulfill the training requirement component of the registration process.

Reciprocity:  Effective March 18, 2004, reciprocity is NOT granted for out-of-state orientation workshop attendance. (CICB-BOP-005)

Priority Registration for Florida Residents: Effective January 17, 2014, Florida residents will be given priority for all CICRP-sponsored activities. Non-resident applicants may still participate in CICRP activities provided:

  1. The event has not reached maximum registration capacity from Florida registrants by the registration deadline; and
  2. Prospective non-resident applicants agree to start and complete the certification process in Florida and are willing to provide services to the Florida courts. (CICB-BOP-005)

Within 3 Year Requirement: Effective April 29, 2015, the orientation workshop requirement must be completed within 3 years of:

  • registering and sitting for the written examination;
  • registering and sitting for the oral qualifications examination; and
  • submission of an application for registration and official court interpreter designation. (CICB-BOP-005, CICB-BOP-006, & CICB-BOP-015)
